Crafted from rice straw left after the harvest, this traditional trivet is handwoven one by one by skilled artisans at Honma Kazuo Shoten on Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture—one of Japan's most celebrated rice-growing regions.

For generations in Japan, rice straw has been transformed into practical household objects during the quiet winter months, making thoughtful use of a natural by-product of rice cultivation. From everyday tools to seasonal decorations, straw craftsmanship was once deeply woven into daily life. Today, however, the number of artisans practising these traditional techniques has declined, and outside of New Year decorations, such work is rarely seen even in Japan. Choosing to use these objects in everyday life helps keep both the craft and the knowledge behind it alive for future generations.

With its natural texture and quiet character, this handwoven trivet pairs beautifully with Nanbu Tekki cast-iron kettles, iron frying pans and Donabe earthenware pots. As it is used over time, the straw gradually develops a rich, warm brown patina, making each piece uniquely its own.
