About Sori Yanagi

Sori Yanagi (1915–2011) is regarded as one of Japan's most influential industrial designers and a pioneer of modern product design. The son of Soetsu Yanagi, founder of Japan's Mingei (folk craft) movement, he carried forward his father's philosophy of "beauty of utility"—the belief that objects become truly beautiful through everyday use. By combining Japan's rich craft traditions with modern manufacturing techniques, Yanagi created thoughtfully designed products that brought timeless functionality to contemporary living. 

Every design was developed through an extensive process of prototyping and practical testing, resulting in the elegant curves and intuitive forms for which his work is renowned. Guided by function rather than decoration, his products have an enduring simplicity that continues to resonate across generations. From the iconic Butterfly Stool to his celebrated collections of kitchenware and tableware, many of the designs he introduced more than half a century ago remain enduring classics and are recognised as landmarks of Japanese product design.
